Knitting and Northern Lights Tour

Knitting and Northern Lights Tour

Itinerary - October 7-11, 2019

October 7

Arrival, Breakfast at Viking Museum - Reykjavik Sightseeing tour (B, D)
Meet & greet at the Airport – breakfast upon arrival, Reykjavík City Sightseeing
You will be met by your guide in the arrival hall, who will take you to your private coach. The route leads from Keflavík airport to a local exhibition museum displaying the Viking Ship Icelander (Íslendingur), there you will enjoy the exhibiton as well as breakfast to regain some energy after your flight.
Your day will then begin with City Sightseeing, from the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík, where more than a third of the Iceland's population lives. During this tour we will see the old town centre, the Parliament, the Cathedral, the harbour, the Pearl, the National Museum and Höfði house, the summit site of 1986. We drive past the city's salmon river, an indication for Reykjavík´s low - pollution levels, and the Árbæjarsafn outdoor folk museum, which offers an interesting contrast to the modern buildings of the most recent part of Reykjavík. Drive continues past Reykjavik's largest outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur which is heated with water from natural hot springs under the city, the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hallgrímskirkja Church (whose steeple is a Reykjavík landmark). There‘s no better way to get to grips with what Reykjavík has to offer in just a few hours.
The tour ends at the city center where your guide will walk with the group to the “Hand Knitting Association of Iceland”, a small shop located in a downtown shopping street, for the first glimpse of the Icelandic wool. It opens at 9 am on weekdays and Saturdays but at 10 am on Sundays.
The rest of the day is free for your leisure.
Overnight in Centerhotel Arnarhvoll or similar: Welcome dinner in a downtown restaurant.

October 8

Exploding Geysers – The beautiful Golden Falls – National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) The Golden Circle is probably the most popular day tour out of Reykjavík and for several good reasons. This is a full-day round tour of the south-west of Iceland and includes three of the best known attractions Iceland has to offer: Gullfoss (The Golden Waterfall), one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe with thousands of tons of icy water thundering majestically into a deep canyon; The Geysir Area, with numerous hot springs, fumeroles and geysers, including the 30 meter spouting world known Strokkur; Þingvellir, a remarkable geological site and a historic site as well. Þingvellir is the site of the world's oldest democratic parliament founded in 930 and the beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the dividing fault line between two of the earth’s tectonic plates. At the end of the day we head back to your accommodation in Reykjavík.
Enroute we will stop at an interesting shop called Þingborg Wool Center. The Þingborg building used to be a school and the local gathering place. The oldest part of the house is from 1927. In 1990 a new building took over and in 1991 a group of local women in the area started to meet in Þingborg and work with wool.
Soon the local ladies took over the house and opened a shop to sell their crafts. A carding machine was put up and they developed methods to work the wool and many articles took shape as can be seen in a wide collection of products.
You will return to Reykjavik in the afternoon.

October 9

This morning we will drive to the Istex factory located in the small town of Mosfellsbær. Here the group will have an interesting guided tour around the factory to see first-hand the process of how the wool enters the factory and ends up packaged and ready to be shipped off around the world! Wool processing has been a trade in Mosfellsbær since 1896, previously with the company Álafoss of Iceland. In 1991, the company Ístex was formed and took over the wool processing. Ístex stands for “Íslenskur Textiliðnaður” which translates into “Icelandic Textile Industry”. Istex is the company producing and selling the famous Alafosslopi and other Lopi yarns for hand knitting such as Plötulopi, Bulkylopi and Léttlopi. They are manufacturers of industrial yarns for knitting, weaving and carpet manufacturing. All products are made out of high quality Icelandic wool. Istex
buys the wool directly from the farmers in Iceland and then process it to yarn.
The wool scouring is located in the town Blönduós in north of the country and the spinning mill in the town Mosfellsbaer nearby Reykjavik. Istex products are sold all over the world through local distributors.
After the Istex visit we walk to the nearby Alafoss outlet shop located in the old wool factory building. Continue to the farm Bjarteyjarsandur, located in the bottom of the Whale Fjord (Hvalfjördur). At Bjarteyjarsandur, sheep and horses are raised; free running hens are on the farm, cats, dogs and special wool rabbits. In addition to that, experiments are being made with mussel farming. Three families live in Bjarteyjarsandur, two of them working on the farm. Here the group will be able to walk around in the farm area, get an introduction on the Icelandic sheep and the unique wool. The group will be able to taste their products. Their sheep stock contains about 600 sheep in total and it is well possible by the time the group is travelling that the sheep have started to have lambs, but it is not sure, as this at its first possible days of the lambing season.
We continue to the community of Hvanneyri, which also houses the Agricultural University of Iceland, the Agricultural Museum as well as a local Wool Center displaying beautiful handmade quality products from the Icelandic wool. There is also a Wool Shop there offering herbal dyed yarn and other unique products.
From Hvanneyri we drive to your hotel for the next night in Húsafell. The Húsafell guests have access to the local swimming pool, which is just few metres away.
Evening activity can be a walk around the pretty area of Húsafell, visit the local church, do a cave exploration, where you can be picked up at the hotel and more.
Dinner and overnight in Hótel Húsafell or similar.

October 10

Borgarfjörður is known for the many ancient Sagas and in particular the 13th Century Icelandic saga “Egil’s Saga” which took place in the area. The area is also known for its natural beauty and you will visit the hot spring of Deildartunguhver and the stunning waterfalls of Hraunfossar. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 meters out of the lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá River from ledges of less porous rock in the lava.
We will visit Háafell, which is well-known in Iceland as a goat farm. The Icelandic goat is an endangered species and the Icelandic Goat Centre at Háafell is working towards protecting and maintaining the goat stock in Iceland. Visitors receive a warm welcome from the goats, which are very people-friendly.                                       We continue to Borgarnes, where we will visit the Settlement museum included is entrance to one of the two exhibits and the Ljómalind farmers market (the market may be closed in winter).
Lunch en route.
Back to Reykjavík for the last night

October 11

Departure Transfer via the Blue Lagoon. Your private bus will pick you up at your hotel. The route leads to the Blue Lagoon; a lagoon with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in a middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue colour. The facilities include modern changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, a winter garden, restaurants and other services. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is invigoration whether one bathes there surrounded by snow in the middle of the winter or in the long summer daylight. We stop there for approximately two hours for a memorable swim. You will then continue to the Keflvik International Airport approximately 3 hours before flight departure.
